This photo was taken along the Chicago River,
while standing on the Lake Street bridge that connects to Wacker Drive. There's
no photo album for this week's shot, but I'm working on one...
These logs/poles are placed about five feet from the bridge foundation, and used
to prevent boats from colliding into the bridge. As you can tell, time --
and a few mishaps -- have taken their toll. The water level is also
unusually high in the river, so you can't see the thick chains that are wrapped
around the logs to keep them together. What grabbed my attention was the
contrast of the snow against the murky water.
Once the photo was in my computer, it took a little bit of work to re-capture
what I saw. The colors were a little washed-out in the image, and it
lacked the contrast that I saw that day. The image also had a considerable
amount of "noise" -- or "grain" in terms of traditional
photography -- that I needed to clean up. But with a little bit of time
spent in Photoshop, I was able to get the site I remembered.
