This photo was taken just west of the Chicago's
"Loop," while standing on Fulton street. I snapped this at
about 10:00 pm after a late night at iExplore's office, which is just a block east,
toward the Loop.
The effect is achieved by keeping the camera's shutter open for eight seconds. With that amount of exposure time, any shake in the
camera becomes very noticeable, and results in a blurred photo. To prevent
that, I used a tripod and remote shutter release. The long shutter
time also meant that the image was going to come out overexposed (too
bright). To minimize the overexposure, I shot with the smallest aperture
possible. One thing I didn't realize was that the long exposure time was
going to exacerbate the effects of lint on my lens -- hence, the "water spots" that are
visible in the skyline. Live and learn.
As I expected, the shot from the camera was too bright. But, that was a
quick adjustment using Photoshop's auto-levels feature. I elected not to
clean up the spots in the skyline.
