Photography : Photo Of The Week : #75 07.20.2003

I took this photo in Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, at the recently-opened African Exhibit.  The elephant was lumbering around, having just completed a splash in the water.

As animal photography goes, I attempted this shot at the absolute worst time -- in the heat of the day.  At least I was smart enough to take a tripod, which really helped on this shot.  Note the hairs that are visible under the chin.  It's taken about 200 ft away, using a 300mm lens.  I used a circular polarizing filter to avoid washed-out color in the bright sunlight.

This photo has been sharpened rather aggressively.  To avoid telltale signs of color fringing, I selected-out the white tusks.  The rest of the image was sharpened.  This resulted in some undesirable noise in the background foliage, but I'm not worried about it since it wasn't in focus anyway.
