This photo of Chicago's skyline was taken at sunrise, looking westward from the Alder Planetarium.  This photo is actually a composite of about 15 individual exposures.  I digitally stitched them together by hand using Adobe Photoshop.  In total, the Photoshop process took me about five hours.  The resulting file was 350 megabytes, with a resolution of 15,420 x 3,160!  I plan to share the details behind my process in an upcoming article.

Here are some notable features in the photo, from left to right.
  • Shedd Aquarium. The ingenious low glass-covered Oceanarium complex looks out over Lake Michigan.
  • The Sears Tower. Massive black tower with white antennae, is the tallest building in Chicago. It's size is obscured by it's distance away, one of the western-most buildings in Chicago's loop.
  • Boats are moored in Monroe Harbor. Every spring, bridges across the Chicago River are raised to allow the boats to pass from their Winter storage out to their Summer slips.
  • The red Strong Insurance Building provides colorful variety to the skyline.
  • The Smurfit-Stone building is topped by a distinctive diamond-shaped roofline.
  • The towering Aon building. The tall white tower in the north east corner of the business loop.
  • The distinctive Hancock Tower peaks over the skyline, from its location among the famous stores of Michigan Avenue.
  • The Lake Point residential tower -- one of the only public structures to the east of Lake Shore Drive -- glistens in the morning sun.
  • Navy Pier -- tourist gem of the lakefront -- extends into Lake Michigan.
  • The Chicago Lighthouse lights the passage to harbors and the river channel.
