This is just an experiment in motion blur, coupled with some
experimental post-processing. I experimenting with moving my camera and
the lens' zoom during a long exposure. I then desaturated the image using
Photoshop's channel mixer, and ran the image through a couple curves
adjustments. I pushed the image pretty hard via curves, but it was
necessary to add enough interest to encourage the viewer to study the lines of
the composition. It also added a dark, grungy quality that I think adds
interest.
The technique behind the motion blur is more art than
science. I tried a lot of different approaches to focus, camera movement,
lens zoom, and exposure time. I learned that the best images have shiny
objects that make light trails to add interest. I also learned to add
clarity to the image by remaining still for the first half of the camera's
shutter time. The rest was just a function of selecting the best of the 30
shots I took after getting that little bit of basic technique figured out.
I won't say that I think this is any great shakes as art.
I don't expect that many people will take a liking to it. But I like it,
and that's good enough for me.
I originally chose a less-dramatic amount of curves
adjustment. Here is that version. I'd welcome your opinion on which
you prefer.
