Grand Canyon 2002
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona November 15-17, 2002
These shots were taken on a trip to hike the South Kaibab
trail in mid-November.
If you go to the canyon, you gotta descend below the wall. I was at the canyon
in 2000, and -- honestly -- didn't find it that inspiring. I'm sure my
Gen-X heritage had something to do with that. But another part of it is
that the canyon just defies comprehension. The scale is enormous -- more
than your field of vision can capture, and more than your depth perception can
engage. It wasn't until I was about four hours into the canyon -- just
able to confirm I was, in fact, finally below the rim -- that I really began to
comprehend the shear size of the canyon.
The trail you see in the lead photo is Bright Angel; about five hours in.
