Zoo Lions
Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago
I took these shots while on a stroll through Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo.
It's a little unexpected to find a zoo in downtown Chicago, and for it to be
free at that. No lines at the sales window, no ticket-takers, no
save-two-dollars Coke cans. Just walk in, and wander around.
The zoo was a great place to try out my new camera -- a Canon 10D with a
75-300mm zoom lens. Due to the specific nature of the digital camera, the
lens is effective range of 120-480mm, which is great for an opportunity like
this. All of these shots were taken at the far range of the lens.
The lens is also one of Canon's "Image Stabilized" models, which works to
counter some of effects of camera shake that are common on long lenses.
I'm quite happy with this camera. Interesting technology; I shake, and it
shakes in the opposite direction. It added about 25% to the price of the
lens, but it sure beats having to lug around a tripod.
I loved my previous camera -- an Olympus e10 -- but
this new Canon allows me to shoot a lot more rapidly thanks to a larger buffer.
The Olympus required a "recycle time" of about 20 seconds after four shots.
With the Canon, I can continue shooting (pretty much) indefinitely. This
allows me to capture action -- like the lions' yawning, stretching, and grooming
below -- more easily. On this day, I think I took about 100 shots of these
lionesses and their two cubs. The shots below are "the keepers."
Camera: Canon 10D, fitted with a 750-300mm IS lens.
