Quick Field Report: Canon 10D March 16, 2003 Quick Field Report: Image Softness at Default Settings Shot at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois on March 15, 2003. Summary: It appears that the 10D's default level of in-camera sharpening is less than other cameras I've used in the past. This realization has created some fervor on discussion boards like DP Review. It doesn't concern to me. First, it's easily alleviated with a little unsharp mask (USM) in Photoshop. Second, I can change the camera setting if I want. I'm probably not going to change the camera. I already post-process my shots in Photoshop, and USM is a standard part of my workflow. Furthermore, I don't want to invite the opportunity for the camera to over-process, which could lead to fringing and other side effects. Note: I haven't ruled-out the possibility that my lens (Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS) is the cause of the softness I've seen.
