Reader's Digest Complete Photography Manual
Highly Recommended
Excellent, well-illustrated book covering the basic technical aspects of photography.
Covers topics such as aperture, filters, reflectors, lens selection,
and basic composition.
National Geographic Photography Field Guide
Recommended
Large array of topics, with brief and basic coverage of each.
Time-consuming to read. Not as immediately applicable as the Reader's
Digest book.
PHOTOgraphic Magazine
Recommended
Informative monthly publication. Good coverage of gear and basic
photographic technique.
Outdoor Photographer
Recommended
Monthly publication with balanced coverage of gear, technique, and locations.

Photography and the Art of Composition
By: Freeman Patterson
Highly Recommended
Insightful advice on the art of seeing, including exercises to develop your
craft. Illustrated. Out of print, but obtainable via used book
sellers on Amazon.com.
Designing a Photograph, Second Edition By: Bill Smith
Read at library, or skip.
Author is excessive in reviewing his personal portfolio, extolling it's merits.
Topics are good, but coverage of them it poor. Little actionable guidance
provided.
Photography and Esthetics Online Articles
By: Alain Briot
Recommended website
Excellent instruction from acclaimed artist and instructor. In-depth
coverage of topics. Requires focus and commitment to "digest" material.
Well-worth the investment.
Photolife Magazine
Recommended
Quarterly UK-based magazine. Covers a variety of topics, including gear
and business issues. But excels at providing guidance on composition and
artistic expression. Available at Borders Bookstores.

Artist Portfolios and Commentaries

Ansel Adams at 100
Highly Recommended
Excellent auto-biographical commentary on the artist's most-notable work.
Insight into technical, aesthetic, and practical aspects of the artist's work.
Hardcover makes nice addition to coffee table. Now available in soft
cover.
Readymades By Jeff Brouws
Recommended
A roadside tour through America in a stark -- yet interesting and pleasing --
style. The photographic subjects are an invigorating assortment of
advertising, pickup trucks, barns, houses, mobile homes, and other American
icons. I find facets of my own personal style within this book.
Worth a look. My main motivation for purchasing was to support the artist.
Drive-By Shootings By David Bradford
Neutral
The streets of New York City, shot by a cab driver. Interesting concept.
Some of the images are compelling, but there are a lot to sift through. I
think this work would have been stronger had the portfolio been trimmed to 10%
of it's current size. The book has limited educational or emotional value,
but I feel that the concept has artistic merit. I bought this book from a
second-hand bookstore; still in it's original cellophane wrapper.

The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers
By Scott Kelby
Highly Recommended
Worth every penny. Numerous valuable techniques. Well illustrated
and efficient in presenting topics. Starting to get a bit dated (written
for PS 7), but still highly recommended.

Luminous Landscape By Michael

Highly Recommended
website
Excellent coverage of gear and photographic technique. I also recommend
the Luminous Landscape Video Journal.
DPReview.com
Recommended
website
Reviews and forums. Canon SLR forums are too busy, and thwart efforts to
develop a good community. Olympus SLR forum was outstanding -- at least it
was for the two years that I frequented it.

Photo Traveler's Guides
Recommended
website
Decent coverage of areas throughout North America, but not exhaustive.
Better than a travelogue, but not Lonely Planet. Comb-bound copies.
National Geographic Photography Field Guide
Mixed
website
Interesting as a travelogue, but not entirely valuable as a resource for
planning trips..
